What you described is no different from policing here, which is all about helping the powers that be maintain their power.

At Kakuma in Kenya, there is a refugee camp, run by the UNHCR. I knew someone who was there, having fled from Uganda under threat of murder by his parents. He is homosexual, and homosexuality is a criminal offence in Uganda. It is not a criminal offence in terms of the United Nations, who run Kakuma, but it is in terms of the law of Kenya, having been so since the days of British colonisation (since 1897, in fact: it is one of the statutes that was imposed by the colonial master that has never been repealed by the independent Kenya).

Simply put, the Kenyan police in the town of Kakuma (population 65,000) exert pressure on refugees at the camp, over which they have jurisdiction as the force of law and order, either for sport or for financial gain. The UN officials on the whole allow this. They allow it because gay men and lesbian women who suffer under this persecution become desperate to get out of Kakuma and to get resettled elsewhere, which is in fact the whole function of a UNHCR refugee camp. The camp, last I heard, has a population of 250,000. If it were in Belgium, it would be the second-largest city here, after Antwerp. If we assess the gay population of any population to be about 10 per cent, there are at least 25,000 gays and lesbians in Kakuma. They all want out, and they all have a "right" to be resettled in terms of the UN's commitments.

But exercise of that right is subject to conditions, the main one of which is paying the UN administrator 70,000 shillings. That's about 310 euros. It's money they don't have, even if it's not all that much money. But 70,000/- multiplied by 25,000 homosexuals is a lot of supplementary income.

It's a scandal, and it's reasonable. It's what they do in Kenya. And maybe it's what they do in nearby Tanzania as well. If Uganda didn't execute its homosexuals, it would be less of a problem, but it's not a problem. Not for the authorities. It's problem for homosexuals. And, for the authorities, it is a cash cow.

This is truly sad. It doesn't happen here, homosexuality is not legal but they live openly and aren't harmed.

It's more psychological with them being ostracized and shunned by the community.

I will research more if this. Thank you for sharing

It's ok to 'like' the post, but not ok to like the content. But you know that already.

Agreed, Graham. Many of us could see the tide turning but didn't know how to stop it. Trump is a convicted criminal on 34 felony counts. Netanyhu is an indicted criminal who is being slooooow walked through a trial. Both were allowed (illegally) to be the heads of their respective governments. I don't know how or why Netanyahu is not facing arrest and forced to attend his trial in Israel. Putin is under indictment by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity, he too, leads his country while deliberately - with malice aforethought poisoning or throwing out of high windows anyone whom he sees as a threat to him.

So there you have it - Three major criminals, heading three countries of import with no consequences to themselves.

So we, in the United States hold rallies nationwide to protest. In poll after poll trump is underwater. But nothing is done to stop him.

In the US this has taken 175 years of under educating most of our children - only a handful of States primarily in the North East but a few others, have even given thought to educating our own children to the best of their ability. The States in MAGAland have deliberately kept their children ignorant.

We have a very good Constitution, but I doubt if even 100,000,000 have ever bothered to read it.

Certainly not trump.

As to the police - they are only as good as people command them to be.

I am more fortunate than you Graham, I will soon be leaving Planet Earth forever. I wonder if Homo sapiens will ever get things right.
