Cream on my Chopin, Liszt
Sunday musical excursion #44
Molly Weir was a Scottish actress who is remembered fondly for one role she played in particular. It’s as a char lady cleaning the floor with the Procter & Gamble product Flash, which would in time become Mr Clean (Monsieur Propre, Meister Proper, Mister Proper, etc.). Molly would vaunt the product’s amazing cleaning qualities, and finish the ads with the words, “And NO messing!” spoken in a broad Springburn accent, on the grounds that the product didn’t leave … a mess, I suppose. I had never really thought that a cleaning product would leave a mess, anyway, but the catchphrase stuck.
Nowadays I can’t wipe a surface clean with a cloth or mop without muttering to myself … and no messing. I never once bought Flash or its legacy products, but I bought into its buy-line.
Last week, I was composing my favourite two composers—Chopin and Liszt—or, for short, my shoppin’ list, and realised I needed cream. “Cream,” I said. Cream. Cream, cream, cream. Cream.
All I Have To Do Is Cream
