Hope springs eternally, but always seeks its target
There are four kinds of people in this world
There are four kinds of people in the world:
Those who hope (not know) you’re right.
Those who hope (not know) you’re wrong.
Those who know whether you’re right or wrong.
Lawyers.
Of these, the most dangerous are the first two.
The danger inherent in the third depends on what it is that you know.
And the least dangerous are lawyers.
Lawyers give opinions, but have no opinion, and they hope that no one is right or wrong; and they know whether someone’s right or wrong still less.
Yet, they have no opinions. It’s the fact they have no opinions that allows them to neither hope nor know that you are right or you are wrong.
And, so, a lawyer who holds an opinion may not be a bad lawyer, but he may be a bad adviser.
Counsel with no opinions give good opinions and even better counsel.
If you know that this is all claptrap, it’s because it is.
And if you know it’s right, then that’s because it is.
And if you hope that it’s right or that it’s wrong, I will stay out of your way.
