On space (and precision fermentation)
Over the nearly two hundred and fifty years since the foundation of the United States, the United States has shown that it can be the most powerful military force in the world, a copious producer of agricultural produce, builder of gargantuan cities, and producer of raw materials almost without parallel. The US is a big success story. So what is the secret of its success?
There are many secrets to its success, but before we look at one of them, we have to qualify success, for the success with which the US has met has not always meant success on the part of countries other than the US.
What has proved again and again to be a crucial factor in the US’s success is space. Not up there, where the controversies still rage as to whether or not the US was ever on the moon (and to be frank, whether they were or they weren’t is really neither here nor there, for if anyone is to fret about a hoax, that surely must be the people who use the acquired knowledge from the moon landings to develop the A-bombs pointed at Russia. Me, it concerns not a whit, but it was entertaining television.)
