Mariza is an artist known intimately in her native Portugal, and seldom outside it. She specialises in a style of song known as fado, a melancholic yearning for lost loves and lost lives. Her real name is Marisa dos Reis Nunes. She was born in 1973 in Mozambique and strikes a quite astonishing pose on the live stage. Portugal is mourning the deaths of 17 persons following the snapping of the cable on a funicular railway in its capital city, sending their rail car and them hurtling to their deaths. There are many who have died in even more tragic circumstances since last I took you on a musical excursion. If you don’t understand Portuguese, then the mere sound of fado can be enough to provoke contemplation of wherever your thoughts reside at this time.
