How the first part ended:
The Luftwaffe seemed to be behind schedule that night when our sleeping household was roused by the awful wail of the sirens. The sudden jump out of deep slumber and hasty dressing left me feeling faint and I remember my mother’s anxiety as I had to pause till the dizziness passed, during our descent to the wash-house. As the siren had been delayed in alerting us, so the night dragged on and we yearned for a snatched sleep even from dawn. All was silence and eventually my Dad decided to risk a reconnoitre around the area. He was soon to return with grave news.
