Seven seconds is how long a child lives without knowing its skin colour. This anti-racist song, written by a Senegalese singer, Youssou N’Dour, and a Swede, Neneh Cherry, makes that assertion and, if it’s in any way scientifically inaccurate, it’s not far off.
It’s the only song that I know which is sung in Senegalese Wolof. This post is dedicated to Abs Ngum, a friend of mine who is a Wolof speaker in The Gambia, and who also has a heavy cross to bear.
