Your comment on Lascaux’s work and “you rarely get a standing ovation from just a single person” are insightful and funny in equal measure. You made me crack up. On “victory over death” can I quote Mr Konigsberg: “I don't want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to achieve immortality through not dying. I don't want to live on in the hearts of my countrymen; I want to live on in my apartment.” And yes, we’ll take you as you are — not that we have an alternative:)
What I mean is that I'm very reluctant to hear something that is said to me and simply dismiss it from my mind without considering what they say. It can happen that I change initial disagreement to agreement, or ultimately disagree. Many will never know my thought processes about what they said to me. However it can also lead me to dislike them.
What you said to me yesterday didn't just stay with me for the afternoon. It stayed with me long after you'd gone.
Love the post, Graham. As you know I prefer not to be paid to write, because I don't want to bother with taxes on even a small extra income. I love writing and reading on Substack because I enjoy the sharing of thoughts with other people. I don't care if people judge me. I'll probably never meet any of you anyway - but I do love the sharing of ideas, whether I agree with them or not.
Our distance from one another on this portal can sometimes be the reason why we feel so free to express ourselves. But that distance can also rob us of the ability to come closer while remaining silent.

No one will ever say anything to me that I do not accord the courtesy of a thought. Even if they'd sooner I hadn't.
