Why should a man with your many talents assist the government or commerce with translation for which they pay diddly squat - you're worth a lot more than that.

Yes, I've heard of Kazakhstan and have an approximate idea of where it is, so thank you for this historical information, very interesting.

Yunnan? Is that another spelling for Yunan - which happens to be my favorite Chinese food, up there with Szetchuan - I don't care for Mandarin - too bland for my palate.

Thank you for this historical information too. I think it's in northeast China - is that correct?

Spellings of non-Latin placenames do vary, according to transcription rules (which is why Beijing is still Pékin in French). Yunnan is in the south-west of China, and you can read more about this beautiful part of our globe here in the Wik: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yunnan.

I posted the first third of the blog essay on LinkedIn and am a little surprised to see it has been reposted twice, and garnered about 170 reactions. Whilst that flatters my vanity a little, it does also concern me greatly: this tale is one that strikes a chord with a large number of excellent professionals such as me, who are likewise finding the going tough.

And with all the wealth in the world, why should professionals like you find the going tough. I admire your willingness to take even menial jobs to support yourself. You are at an age where your gender counts against you. My late husband was 5 years older than me. We both retired in 1988 (me 55, Jack 60) He took a big, unexpected hit on the stock market (another reason I distrust it) so one of us had to go to work, We had built a home and moved to a neighboring County in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. There were not enough teaching substitute jobs to adequately support us so both of us looked for work - I had no problem finding work. Jack kept hearing you're over qualified. BS - we both had college educations - Jack an AA in photography and a Bachelor of Business Administration - but recruiters apparently distrust older men, think they will keep seeking promotions, while they hold females in such low esteem they think we'll never seek higher rank. Tough patooties. I stayed with the County job for 14 years, was promoted 63 times and left for a better paying and more challenging job in the private sector. Jack died in 1999. I worked for 22 more years after his death, bringing in more money than both of us made together. Maybe you should pull a "Tootsie" (:-)
