An interesting concept, and one in which I find myself in agreement. If as Putin has stated, his desire is to eradicate Ukrainians from the face of the earth, destroy the women and children first. I can see how this appeals to trump also. He learned from his father's treatment of his mother that women are useless except in bed, so why protect them. I do not see the humor in people dying, though
Mr Trump belongs to a class of politician - to be found in all political camps, not just his - that adheres to the mantra that one section of American society needs protecting above any other, and that is white, middle-class women. The story of To Kill A Mockingbird is a paragon example of this, in which even a working-class woman is deemed worthy of protection (except, that is, from her own father). It would be interesting to know the precise demographics of women seeking abortion in the US prior to the overruling of Wade against Roe. I think I know, but it's just a guess.
The essay is a little bit cobbled together from this and that, but it simply struck me that "women and children first" can apply as much when destroying peoples as when rescuing ship passengers. I couldn't hear Nigel Patrick's comic retort without immediately thinking of all those children around our world who would, indeed, be so glad of a cup of cocoa, or a morsel of anything, whose hunger could be assuaged if only we who are safe and sound would lend a hand in their rescue.
Thanks Graham, Trump is misogynist - he despises women, who actually need protection from him.
To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books and movies. I've always thought of it as a young girl who greatly admires her father for taking up losing causes that are morally and ethically correct, but socially wrong.
Abortion on the other hand, is in my view strictly a medical procedure in the same class as a complete colectomy, or mastectomy (both of which I've had). No lawyer or legislator has any business involving themselves in dictating a medical procedure in which they have little or no knowledge. Abortion, like all medical procedures, should be left in the competent hands of a trained, skilled, licensed and registered doctor and the doctor's patient. I think we "women" have approached the process incorrectly as a choice, a woman's choice.
I did my masters thesis on parturition in dairy goats, so I did a lot of research on gestation and parturition in mammals - including humans goats, cattle, and sheep. In medical terms, the loss of a fetus, prior to live birth is an spontaneous abortion (commonly referred to as miscarriage) Sometimes a fetus dies in the uterus (womb), If it is not spontaneously aborted, the toxins created by the deterioration of the dead fetus can kill the mother. There are some life threatening malformations of the fetus that can threaten the life of both mother and fetus. Any of these things require an abortion. The father's interest in this process only occurs on the creation and from the moment of birth on. During the 280 days of gestation any decisions on human birth are the right of the physician and mother.

Thanks for your kind comments, Fay, as usual.
