"money would still be a major part of the Olympics: faster, higher, stronger, more profitable." Thank you Graham. This quote says it all. In my youth (yeah, really ancient history) there was a saying 'money is the root of all evil I guess from the King James version of the bible. Whatever, in 'modern' society money seems to be all and end all of life. It is too bad that every entertainment - art, sculpture, music, acting, sports etc. is reliant on money. Frankly, I enjoy a free high school game of American style football just as much as a $280 seat in the nosebleed section of an NFL game. Guess I'm just weird
Money is the root of all evil, but it is also the root of all eating, and we cannot affirm the one without affirming the other.
The money issue is less the cost of seeing sport, but the reward from participating in it. Competitors have in their time been stripped of Olympic medals after their money-earning sporting activities later came to light. With professionals now able to take part, some results are a foregone conclusion, and the playing field might well be level, but is set at such a level as to make sponsorship the only way to train and have a chance at a medal. That works against athletes with less cash at their disposal. In Paris the first time around, 1924, Eric Liddell, a devout reader of your cited work, declined to run his 400 metre heat because it was scheduled for a Sunday, the Lord's Day. If he'd had sponsorship from a big-name sporting goods manufacturer, I don't believe following his conscience would have been an option.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with most of your response. Money is not the root of all eating - it is still possible to grow all that you eat. so money is only the root of 'some' eating.
