One of the most admired figures in Ukraine is not Joseph Biden or Michael Gorbachev, but British prime minister Boris Johnson, for having supplied them with anti-tank technology during the early phase of their war with Russia. By contrast, one of the most despised historical figures in Ukraine is not Joseph Stalin. It is not even Czar Nicholas II. It is British prime minister Neville Chamberlain.
The reason why Neville Chamberlain is despised in that country is because of the 1938 Treaty of Munich, whose terms were very quickly shredded into oblivion by Hitler’s invasion of Poland. Chamberlain is despised because he tried to make peace with a tyrant. In previous articles on this blog, I have tried to argue that that was an admirable thing to do, even that Chamberlain had no choice, the alternative being to … do what? Declare war?
