I think you'd at some point asked me about "acting" certain texts (I did so for "Aunt Elsie's Sugar Bowl"). It's really the Substack discussion forum that put me onto this, and I realised that a 15-minute read might put off some people, whereas they might feel okay about listening to something in the car as they drive to work and so forth, and I do quite like the sound of my own voice, but not when it's recorded - I never listen to the recordings myself.

It's not that I'm avid for audience, and that's not because I love me, who do you love? It's just, I wouldn't like anyone to miss out for want of 15 minutes. The distance between one chime of the clock and the next. But audience is not important...

A reclusive friend of mine used to say, "I'm not antisocial, I just don't like people." In the same vein: "I don't seek a public, I just don't want people to miss out."

Audio makes your pieces more accessible and that’s good regardless of how many people listen. You’ll never be mainstream and let’s be happy for that. And I completely get that reclusive friend of yours. Or did you have me in mind? :)

One day, I will make a cake and decorate it with the words "You’ll never be mainstream", then I will cut it in two and force you to eat BOTH halves.

No, a barrister I once knew and who is still a recluse.
